Wahab Akbar's Early Life and Education
Wahab Akbar was born in Lantawan, a town in Basilan. His father, Hadji Mohtamad Salajin, was the first mayor of that town. When Wahab was 11 years old, he joined his father in fighting in the mountains. After three years, his father decided to work with the government. President Ferdinand Marcos then appointed his father as the mayor of Lantawan.
Wahab Akbar studied agriculture at Gregorio Araneta University, which is now called De La Salle Araneta University. He did not finish his studies there.
Political Career and Public Service
Akbar was a member of the Liberal Party. He was first elected as the governor of Basilan in the 1998 elections. He was very popular and was reelected two more times, in 2001 and 2004.
Because of the rules, he could not run for governor a fourth time in a row. Instead, he successfully ran for a seat in the Congress. He represented the lone district of his home province. One of his wives was elected to take his place as governor. Another of his wives became the mayor of Isabela City, which is the capital of Basilan province.
Tragic Death of Wahab Akbar
On November 13, 2007, a terrible explosion happened at the House of Representatives building in the Batasang Pambansa complex. Wahab Akbar was seriously injured in this blast. He was taken to the Far Eastern University - Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation Medical Center, but he sadly died from his injuries.
The explosion also immediately killed the driver of another politician. Three other people who worked for Congress, including one of Akbar's own assistants, later died from their injuries. Police officials believed that Wahab Akbar might have been the main target of the bombing. This was because his vehicle was hit the hardest by the explosion.
The day after he passed away, his body was brought back to Basilan through Zamboanga City. His body was taken to the homes of his first two wives. He was then buried in front of his mansion in Barangay Sumagdang, Isabela, which was still being built at the time.
