Chief Wahveveh, also known as Wewawewa, was an important leader and warrior of the Northern Paiute people. He lived in the 1800s and was the half-brother of another well-known Paiute leader, Chief Paulina. Wahveveh was involved in many events during a time of change and conflict in Central Oregon. He passed away in 1866.

Who Was Chief Wahveveh?

Chief Wahveveh was a brave warrior and a leader among the Northern Paiute people. He was known for fighting alongside his half-brother, Chief Paulina. They were both important figures during a time when different groups were clashing in Central Oregon.

Family and Allies

Wahveveh had two brothers who also fought with him. His half-brother was the famous Chief Paulina. They also had another brother named Oitsi. All three brothers worked together and were part of the same group of warriors.

Conflicts in Central Oregon

In the 1860s, there were many conflicts in Central Oregon. Wahveveh and his group were involved in several of these. They sometimes fought against other Native American tribes and also against U.S. Army forces.

The Attack on the Tyghs

Wahveveh helped his brother, Chief Paulina, in battles against Chief Poustaminie of the Warm Springs people. In one event, Wahveveh's group attacked the Tyghs. The Tyghs were building a bridge when the attack happened. During this fight, Chief Poustaminie tried to show he wanted peace. He put down his weapons. However, Wahveveh ordered one of his warriors to kill Poustaminie.

The Search for Paulina

Later, Chief Paulina was involved in a conflict where Wasco Chief Queapama died. Because of this, a group was formed to find Paulina. This group included First Sergeant Billy Chinook and other Wasco Scouts from the U.S. Army.

The scouts attacked a Paiute camp at Dry Creek. They captured or killed all 32 Paiutes there. The scouting party then found Paulina near Lake Henry on Steens Mountain. Paulina was able to escape into a cave. But Chief Wahveveh and two other Paiute warriors could not get away. They were killed by the Wasco Scouts.
