Waimānalo (pronounced vai-mah-NAH-lo) is a community located on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaii, United States. It's a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's a specific area identified by the government for collecting population data, but it's not an officially incorporated city or town.

The name Waimānalo comes from the Hawaiian language and means "potable water" or "drinking water." This name was given because the area used to have many ponds with slightly salty water that people used for watering plants.

Waimānalo is on the eastern side of Oʻahu, known as the windward coast. It has a small shopping area along Kalanianaʻole Highway. The community is known for its local feel and large farms that stretch towards the Koʻolau mountains. Many plant nurseries are found here. You won't find any hotels in Waimānalo.

Near Waimānalo, about 1,000 meters to the east, is the neighborhood of Waimānalo Beach. This beach has the longest stretch of sandy shoreline on Oʻahu.

Waimānalo is also home to Sea Life Park, a fun place where you can see marine animals and learn about ocean life. The U.S. postal code for Waimānalo is 96795.

Geography

Waimānalo is located at coordinates 21°20′45″N 157°43′5″W. The closest town to the west is Kailua, and to the east is Waimānalo Beach. Waimānalo Beach is part of the traditional Hawaiian land division called an Ahupuaa of Waimānalo.

The entire area of Waimānalo is about 11.3 square kilometers (4.36 square miles), and it's all land.

In 2020, Waimānalo had a population of 6,057 people. In 2000, there were 3,664 people living there. The community had 849 households, with many families living together. About 38.9% of households had children under 18. The average household had about 4.31 people.

The population was spread out by age, with about 31.4% of residents being under 18 years old. The median age in the community was 30 years.

Tourism

Waimānalo is home to Sea Life Park, a popular attraction where visitors can learn about marine biology and see various sea animals. It's located near Makapuʻu Beach.

Waimānalo is also known as the birthplace of Chad Rowan, who became famous as Akebono, a grand champion in sumo wrestling. He was the first non-Japanese wrestler to reach the highest rank of yokozuna in 1993. You can find a large statue of Akebono at the Waimānalo Shopping Center, which is a popular spot for tourists to take photos.
