Wenji-maadab (also known as Wain-che-mah-dub or Wendjimadub) was an important leader of the Ojibwe people. His name means "Where He Moves From Sitting." He was born on March 10, 1840, and passed away on February 14, 1920, or 1921. He served as a Chief at the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota.

A Special Speaker

Wenji-maadab was part of the Mississippi Chippewa. During his time, being a chief was more of an honorary title. It was given by the United States government. Even so, Wenji-maadab was very respected for his amazing speaking skills.

A Gifted Orator

A person named Gilfillan described Wenji-maadab as a "genius." He said Wenji-maadab was "a truly, remarkably eloquent man." Gilfillan believed he was "the best speaker, the greatest orator" he had ever met. He noted Wenji-maadab's "vehemence, the fire, the energy, command of language, range of thought." These qualities made him a true orator, someone who could speak powerfully and inspire others.

Wenji-maadab's Life

Wenji-maadab also had a Christian name, which was Joseph Charette. He had a large family with three wives and thirteen children.

Service and Leadership

He was a veteran of the American Civil War. He fought for the Union Army. Later in his life, in 1910, he served as President for The 14th June Association. This shows his continued involvement in community and leadership roles.
