Discovering the Wainui River
The Wainui River is a special part of the Abel Tasman National Park. This park is famous for its beautiful beaches and native forests. The river starts high up on the slopes of Mount Evans. This mountain is part of the stunning landscape of the Tasman Region.
Where the River Begins
The very start of the Wainui River is near a place called Wainui Saddle. This area is also close to the Abel Tasman Inland Track. The Inland Track is a walking path that goes through the park's forests. Shortly after the river begins, another path, the Wainui Track, follows its course. You can even find a small hut called Wainui Hut right next to the river. It's a great spot for hikers to rest.
Journey Through the Bush
Most of the Wainui River flows through thick native bush. This means it's surrounded by New Zealand's natural forests. The lower half of the river winds its way through a narrow gorge. A gorge is like a deep, narrow valley with steep sides. The river has carved this gorge over many years.
Amazing Wainui Falls
One of the most exciting parts of the Wainui River is the Wainui Falls. This waterfall is 20 metres (66 ft) tall, which is about the height of a six-story building! It's one of the easiest waterfalls to visit in the Tasman Region. You can reach Wainui Falls from a car park in Wainui Bay. There's a gentle walking path called the Wainui Falls Track. It's a fun and easy walk for families and kids.
