History of Waioneke

Before Europeans settled here, Māori had a fortified village called a at Waioneke. This shows that people lived here a long time ago.

From 1880 to 1900, Waioneke was a busy place for gum digging. People would dig up kauri gum, which was used for things like varnish.

In the 1970s, deer farming started in the area. A special factory was built in Waioneke to process the deer.

The Kaipara Estate winery began making wine in the Waioneke Valley in 1995.
