Waiting for Santa (also known as Barney's Happy Christmas in Australia) is the very first Christmas special from the Barney and the Backyard Gang series. It came out on video in 1990. This special features many classic Christmas songs and some new ones too! It was super popular, selling almost five million copies by 1999.
The Christmas Adventure
On Christmas Eve, everyone in Michael's house is asleep, except for Michael and his sister, Amy. They really want to stay awake to see Santa Claus! But they soon fall asleep.
Suddenly, they wake up when Barney gets stuck trying to come down their chimney! Michael and Amy help pull him out. Once Barney is free, he magically brings their friends over.
Barney explains that Derek, a new boy in the neighborhood, is worried Santa won't know his new address. Derek also wishes for new friends more than anything else. So, Barney takes the gang to Derek's house to pick him up.
Then, they all go on a magical sleigh ride to the North Pole! There, they meet a friendly snowman and even go ice skating on a frozen pond.
After their fun, they meet Mrs. Claus. She shows Derek that his new address is in Santa's computer. This proves Santa will definitely visit him! After having some fun in Santa's workshop, they all return home.
Barney reads the famous poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (also called "Twas the Night Before Christmas") to Michael and Amy. They don't even realize Santa is already there! Soon, they fall asleep. At the very end, you see Santa's shape flying over the moon, shouting, "Ho ho ho. Merry Christmas!"
