Wakapau, also known as Wakapoa, is a special village in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region of Guyana. It's home to the Arawak peoples, an Amerindian group. The village is located right on the Wakapau River. This river is a smaller stream that flows into the larger Pomeroon River.

The name 'Wakapau' comes from the Lokono word 'Wakokwãn'. This word means 'pigeon'. What makes Wakapau truly unique is that it's made up of twenty islands. These islands are found in swampy areas surrounded by thick forests. Some islands are so small that only one family lives there!

Where is Wakapau?

Wakapau is in the northern part of Guyana. It sits on the Wakapau River. This river is a "tributary," which means it's a smaller river that flows into a bigger one. In this case, it joins the Pomeroon River. The village is about 3 kilometers (less than 2 miles) from where the Wakapau River meets the Pomeroon River.

A Rich History and Culture

Wakapau has a long history. It was one of the first ten "Indian reservations" in British Guiana. These were special areas set aside for indigenous communities. The people of Wakapau have done an amazing job of keeping their traditions alive. They have preserved their unique Arawak culture. They also still speak their original tribal language.

Life in Wakapau

Life in Wakapau is closely connected to nature. The community lives on islands in swamps. These areas are surrounded by beautiful forests. Education is important here. The village has three primary schools for younger children. There is also one secondary school for older students.

How People Make a Living

The people of Wakapau have a few main ways to earn a living. Many are involved in logging, which means cutting down trees for wood. They also do "subsistence farming." This is when families grow food mainly for themselves, not to sell. Boat services are also important. They help people travel between the islands and transport goods.
