Walkermine is a place in Plumas County, California that used to be a small town or community. It was also known as International for some time. This former settlement sits high up in the mountains, about 6,076 feet (which is about 1,852 meters) above sea level. You can find Walkermine about 3 miles (or 4.8 kilometers) southwest of a mountain called Mount Ingalls.

What Was Walkermine?

Walkermine is what we call a "ghost town" or a "former settlement." This means it was once a place where people lived and worked, but now it's mostly empty or abandoned. Many such places in California grew because of mining.

How Walkermine Got Its Name

The names "Walkermine" and "International" both came from nearby mines. It was common for towns in mining areas to be named after the mines that brought people there. These mines were likely the main reason people moved to this remote area.

Post Offices in Walkermine

Even though it was a small place, Walkermine had its own post offices over the years.

  • The first post office was called the International post office. It was open from 1918 to 1923.
  • Later, a new post office opened under the name Walkermine. This one operated from 1930 to 1941.

These post offices were important for the people living there. They helped them send and receive letters and packages from the outside world. When the mines closed or people moved away, the post offices also closed down.
