In 1970, Wallace Holland was elected to the City Council of Pontiac, Michigan. The City Council is a group of elected officials who help run the city. They make decisions about local laws and services.
Serving as Mayor
In 1974, the City Council chose Holland to be the mayor of Pontiac. He served in this role until 1978. After his first term, he worked as an executive for General Motors.
Later, Pontiac changed its government system. It became a "strong mayor" government. This means the mayor has more power to lead the city. In 1981, Holland won the general election and became mayor again in 1982.
Political Challenges and Return
In the 1985 election, Walter L. Moore defeated Holland. However, Holland ran again in 1989 and won, defeating Moore. He served another term as mayor.
In 1993, Holland ran for mayor once more. He faced challenges from state representative Charlie Harrison Jr. and former mayor Walter Moore. Voters had concerns about the city's finances, safety, and population. Holland did not win this election. Charlie Harrison Jr. became the next mayor.
Later Life
Wallace E. Holland passed away in 1998. He was 71 years old. His death was due to complications from diabetes.
