The Wallsend Railway Goods Shed is a very old building in Wallsend, Australia. It used to be a place where goods were stored and moved from trains. People also call it the Wallsend Locomotive Shed. Today, the Newcastle City Council owns this important building. It was officially listed as a special heritage site in New South Wales on April 2, 1999.
History of the Goods Shed
This goods shed was built in 1877. It was part of the Wallsend railway line. Before this brick building, there was an older wooden shed nearby, built around 1868. The plans for the new shed showed it would be 80 feet long and 20 feet wide. It had two large doors at the back for unloading goods from trains. A new Wallsend railway station was also built at the same time.
Over the years, the building was used for many different things. It was even a car sales yard for a while. Later, it became the Wallsend Enterprise Centre. In 1989, there were plans to knock it down for roadworks. But luckily, it was saved! A special order in December 1989 protected it.
In 2018, the old goods shed became an office. It is now home to the Totally & Permanently Incapacitated Veterans' Association of New South Wales.
Why This Building is Special
The Wallsend Railway Goods Shed is very important because it is the only building left from the old Newcastle Wallsend Coalmining Railway. That railway closed way back in 1939! It is also one of the few old brick railway goods sheds still standing in New South Wales.
Because of its history and unique design, the Wallsend Railway Goods Shed was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means it is a protected site.
