Wallumettagal facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Wallumettagal people were an important Aboriginal tribe. They lived in the area we now call Ryde and Hunters Hill in Sydney, Australia. Their name comes from the word wallumai, which means "snapper fish." This shows how connected they were to the natural world around them.

Who Were the Wallumettagal People?

The Wallumettagal, also known as the Wallumedegal, were an Aboriginal tribe. They were part of a larger group called the Eora people. The Eora were many different clans who lived around the Sydney Harbour area.

Where Did the Wallumettagal Live?

The Wallumettagal tribe lived on the north side of the Parramatta River. This area stretched from the Lane Cove River west towards Parramatta. Today, this includes the City of Ryde and Hunters Hill. These places are in the Northern Suburbs of Sydney.

Remembering Their History

In the early days of Sydney's history, the Ryde-Hunters Hill area was known by another name: Wallumatta. This name was given to honour the original Wallumettagal inhabitants.

Today, you can visit the Wallumatta Nature Reserve. This small reserve protects some of the original plants and trees that grew in the area where the Wallumettagal people lived. It helps us remember their connection to the land.
