Walnut is a small, unincorporated community located in Marshall County, Indiana. Being "unincorporated" means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's a group of homes and businesses within Walnut Township.
A Look Back: Walnut's History
Walnut wasn't always called Walnut! It was first known as Fredericksburg. In 1866, the area was planned out and mapped. This process is called being "laid out and platted."
Two years later, in 1868, a railroad line was built right through the community. Because of the railroad, the name was changed to Walnut. It was named after Walnut Township, the larger area it belongs to.
A post office opened in Walnut in 1869. It helped people send and receive mail for many years until it closed in 1906.
