Walnut Hills is a cool neighborhood located in Dayton, Ohio, United States. It's surrounded by Wayne Avenue to the south, Pursell Avenue to the east, Wyoming Street to the north, and the historic Woodland Cemetery to the west. Walnut Hills shares its borders with other neighborhoods like Twin Towers and Linden Heights to the north, Hearthstone to the east, and Belmont to the south.
This area of Dayton was once mostly open farm fields. Woodland Cemetery, which is the highest point in Dayton, is right here in Walnut Hills. During the big Great Dayton Flood of 1913, most of Walnut Hills stayed dry. This helped more people move there and made its population grow. Even in the 1960s, when Dayton's population started to shrink, Walnut Hills stayed strong and kept its number of residents steady.
A Neighborhood's Story
Walnut Hills grew as a "streetcar suburb." This means it was a neighborhood that developed along the routes of electric streetcars. These streetcars made it easy for people to travel to and from the city center. Today, the neighborhood is known for its electric trolleybuses. These buses use the same overhead wires that the old streetcars once used! Workers from big companies like NCR, Delco, and Frigidaire used the streetcar network a lot when it was at its busiest.
Why "Walnut Hills"?
The neighborhood got its name because there used to be, and still are, many walnut trees growing in the area. Imagine hills covered with beautiful walnut trees!
