A Walnut Whip is a yummy chocolate treat! It's shaped like a swirly cone made of milk chocolate. Inside, it has a soft, whipped vanilla filling. And right on top, there's a tasty half-walnut.

The Sweet Start of Walnut Whip

When Did Walnut Whips First Appear?

The Walnut Whip was first made way back in 1910. It was created by a company called Duncan's of Edinburgh. This makes the Walnut Whip Nestlé Rowntree's oldest chocolate brand that is still sold today!

Where Are Walnut Whips Made?

Today, Walnut Whips are made in a town called Halifax, West Yorkshire in the UK. They use a lot of walnuts for these treats. More than one million walnuts are used every week! Most of these walnuts come from countries like China and India.

Nestlé, the company that owns Walnut Whip, says that people in the UK eat almost one Walnut Whip every two seconds. That's a lot of chocolate cones!

Different Kinds of Walnut Whips

How Walnut Whips Have Changed Over Time

Walnut Whips were first made by hand at Duncan's factory in Edinburgh. Over the years, there have been different flavors. You could find coffee and maple Walnut Whips. But now, the most common flavor is vanilla.

The way the walnut is placed on top has also changed. At first, the original Walnut Whip always had a half-walnut on top. Sometimes, they used walnuts that had broken during shipping. Later, they even added an extra walnut inside the cone! But eventually, the walnut inside was removed, leaving just one on the outside.

How Walnut Whips Are Made Now

The chocolate cone and the vanilla filling have changed over time too. When they were first made, the chocolate cones were shaped by hand. Workers would squeeze chocolate from a bag onto a mold. This gave the cones their deep, ridged look. The filling inside was also thicker back then.

In the late 1970s, the company Rowntree's took over Duncan's. The way Walnut Whips were made changed from being handmade to being made by machines. Machines now create the hollow chocolate cones. They tried to make the machine-made cones look like the old handmade ones, but it was a bit tricky. Now, the ridges on the outside are mostly for decoration.

New "Whip" Flavors Without Walnuts

In 2017, Nestlé announced a new version of the treat. This new version does not have a walnut on top and is simply called "Whip."

By 2020, you could also find Mint and Caramel versions of the "Whip." Nestlé is adding more choices to its swirly cone treats. They now offer "Delicate Vanilla," "Delicious Caramel," and "Delightful Mint" "Whips." This means you can choose if you want a walnut or not! The original Walnut Whip with the walnut is still available in some stores.
