After finishing his studies, Walter Benz became a professor. This means he taught at universities and also did his own research. He worked at several different universities during his career.
He taught at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. Later, he moved to other universities. He was a professor at the University of Bochum. He also taught at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Finally, he worked at the University of Hamburg in Germany.
When he retired from teaching, he was given a special title: professor emeritus. This means he was a retired professor, but he was still honored for all his hard work and knowledge. He also received an honorary degree, called a Dr. h.c., which is a special award given to people who have achieved great things.
