Walter Fane (1828–1885) was a British officer who served in the British Indian Army. He worked in different parts of India and also in China. He is famous for creating a special group of soldiers called Fane's Horse. This group was made up of Indian volunteers. Today, Fane's Horse is still an important part of Pakistan's army.

Walter Fane's Early Life
Walter Fane was born in 1828 in a place called Fulbeck in England. He was part of the Fane family. His father was Reverend Edward Fane.
His Time in the Army
Walter Fane joined the army in 1845. He became a lieutenant in 1853.
Fighting in India
Fane served with the Punjab Irregular Cavalry. This was a special army group that protected the North West frontier of India. They often fought against local tribes in that area.
During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Fane helped fight against a leader named Tantya Tope. Fane was there when Tantya Tope was captured.
Fane's Horse in China
In 1860, Walter Fane created a new group of soldiers. They were called Fane's Horse. This group was made up of Indian volunteers. They went to China to fight in the Second Opium War.
Fane's Horse fought in several battles, including Sinho and Chinkiawbaw. They also helped take over Peking (now called Beijing). For his brave actions, Walter Fane received a special award called the Companion of the Order of the Bath. His cousin, Field Marshal Sir John Michel, was also involved in these battles.
Later Years and Legacy
Besides being a soldier, Walter Fane was also an artist. He had some success with his art during his life. He was considered the most artistic person in his family.
Walter Fane got married but did not have any children. He passed away at the age of 58 in Fulbeck, the same place where he was born. He is buried there.
