Walter Napleton Stone VC (December 7, 1891 – November 30, 1917) was a very brave English soldier. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for courage in battle. This special medal is given to soldiers from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. Walter was born in Blackheath, London. He showed amazing bravery during the First World War.

Early Life and Military Service

Growing Up

Walter Stone was born on December 7, 1891. His parents were Edward and Emily Frances Stone. He grew up in Blackheath, a part of London. Walter went to two well-known schools: Harrow School and Pembroke College, Cambridge.

A Hero in World War I

When he was 25 years old, Walter Stone was a Captain in the British Army. He served with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers, during the First World War. He was attached to the 17th (Service) Battalion.

His Victoria Cross Action

Captain Stone earned the Victoria Cross for his incredible bravery on November 30, 1917. This happened in the Cambrai Sector in France. During a very tough battle, he showed outstanding leadership and courage. Sadly, he died during these brave actions.

Remembering Walter Stone

Memorials

There is a special memorial for Walter Napleton Stone in Greenwich Cemetery in south-east London. Near a larger war memorial, you can find the graves of the Stone family. On the biggest stone, it mentions Walter's parents. Below their names, it also remembers Walter and his brother, Arthur.

The inscription says that Captain Walter Napleton Stone VC, of the 17th Royal Fusiliers, was killed at Bourlon Wood, France, on November 30, 1917. It is believed he was buried by the Germans near Moeuvres.

Where He Is Remembered

Walter's actual grave has never been found. Because of this, his name is listed on the Cambrai Memorial to the Missing. This memorial honors soldiers who died in the Cambrai area and whose graves are unknown.
