Who Was Walter de Haliburton?
Walter de Haliburton was the oldest son of Sir John Haliburton of Dirleton. His mother was Margaret Cameron of Ballegarno. When his father passed away in 1392, Walter took over the family's land in Dirleton, located in East Lothian. He also inherited more land from his uncle in the early 1400s.
Walter's Role with King James I
In 1424, Walter de Haliburton played a part in the return of King James I. The King had been held captive in England. Walter was one of the important people, called "hostages," who helped secure the King's release. This meant he had to stay in England for a short time. He was allowed to return to Scotland in July 1425.
Working with England
Walter was also chosen to be a Scottish Commissioner in 1430. This meant he was part of a group sent to meet with English representatives. Their job was to discuss and fix problems between Scotland and England. He went to Hawdenstank with 800 men for these important talks.

Lord High Treasurer of Scotland
In 1439 and 1440, Walter was named the Lord High Treasurer of Scotland. This role was like being in charge of all the country's money. He managed the government's finances and spending. He held this important job until 1449. To be the Treasurer, he also had to be a Privy Councillor, which meant he was a trusted advisor to the King.
Becoming a Lord of Parliament
In 1440, Walter de Haliburton was given the title of a Lord of Parliament. This made him a member of the Scottish Parliament. It showed his high status and influence in the country.

Walter de Haliburton was married twice and had several children.
His First Marriage
Walter married Lady Isobel. She was the daughter of Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, who was a powerful ruler (a Regent) in Scotland. Lady Isobel had been married before to Alexander Leslie, Earl of Ross.
Walter and Lady Isobel had five children:
