Wanda Koop is a Canadian artist who creates many different kinds of art. She lives and works in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Besides being an artist, she is also a community activist. She started Art City, which is a free art center for young people in Winnipeg.

About Wanda Koop
Wanda Koop was born on November 5, 1951, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her parents were from Ukraine and spoke German. She studied art at the Lemoine FitzGerald School of Art at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. She finished her studies in 1973.
Awards and Recognition
Wanda Koop has received many important awards for her art and community work. In 2002, she was given the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. She became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2005. In 2006, she was made a member of the Order of Canada, which is a very high honor. She also received the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts in 2016.
In 2007, a documentary film called Wanda Koop: In Her Eyes was made about her. It showed her and her mother visiting Russia, where her mother was born.
Wanda Koop's Art
Wanda Koop's art has been shown in many places. Even when she was still a student in 1972, her work was part of an exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. She has had many solo exhibitions, which means shows featuring only her art.
Exhibitions and Styles
Throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, Koop's art was featured in many shows. Some of these were traveling exhibitions, meaning they moved to different cities. One show was called Airplanes and the Wall in 1985. Another was Wanda Koop: Recent Paintings in 1991. Her exhibit See Everything, See Nothing was shown at The New Gallery in 1998.
A big exhibition of her work, called On The Edge Of Experience, was shown at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario, from February to May 2011.
Wanda Koop often mixes different art forms in her work. She uses video, performance, and photography along with painting. She likes to explore new ways to use paint and video to express feelings like loss and hope.
Recent Works
One of her famous series of paintings is called "Barcode Face." These artworks show a new way of looking at Canadian landscapes. She revisited this series in 2021. These pieces were part of a group exhibition in New York City.
In 2022, her exhibition View From Here was shown at the new Inuit art building at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Also in 2022, her exhibition Wanda Koop: Lightworks was displayed at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. In 2024, she showed new artworks at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. This was her first big solo exhibition in Quebec, titled Wanda Koop: Who Owns the Moon.
Community Work
Wanda Koop is not just an artist; she is also very active in her community. In 1998, she started Art City. This is a community art center located in the West Broadway neighborhood of Winnipeg. She created Art City to connect modern artists with young people from the inner city. It gives them a free place to explore art.
