Wanggeom-seong (Korean: 왕검성) was a very important city in ancient Korea. It served as the capital city for the kingdom of Gojoseon for many years. This was between 194 BC and 108 BC. Sometimes, you might also see it called Wangheom-seong (Hangul: 왕검성; 王險城).

Where Was Wanggeom-seong Located?

Historians and archaeologists today are not completely sure where Wanggeom-seong was located. There are two main ideas about its exact spot.

Different Ideas About Its Location

One idea suggests that the capital city was located near the modern-day city of Pyongyang. This idea comes from old Korean history books like the Samguk yusa and Samguk sagi. These books are very important for understanding ancient Korea.

Some experts from South Korea think it was located somewhere around Liaodong. Liaodong is a region in what is now China. This shows that even ancient history can have mysteries that historians are still trying to solve!
