The Wanggeriburra clan are one of the nine main groups of the Yugambeh people. They are the original Indigenous people from the Tamborine area in the Scenic Rim, Queensland, Australia.

What Does Wanggeriburra Mean?

The name Wanggeriburra comes from a Yugambeh word, Wanggeri. This word means "Pretty-faced Wallaby". The ending -burra means "people". So, Wanggeriburra means "Pretty-faced Wallaby People". This animal might have been important to them, perhaps as a special animal (a totem) or a common food source in their land.

The Wanggeriburra Language

The Wanggeriburra people spoke a special way of the Yugambeh language. We still have over a thousand words from their dialect today!

In 1913, a man named John Allen (whose Aboriginal name was Bullum) worked with John Lane to write down the grammar and words of this language. They found that the Wanggeriburra people spoke a very similar language to their neighbours, the Mununjali clan.

According to John Allen's map, the Wanggeriburra's traditional lands reached north to Cedar Creek. To the west, they went as far as the Birnam Range. In the south, their land extended to the McPherson Range. The Coomera River's starting points and the Darlington Range were on their eastern side.

The Wanggeriburra lived south of the Gugingin clan, who were on the Logan River. They were in the Tamborine area, north of the Tulgigin clan. The Bullongin and Kombumerri clans lived to their east.
