Wannanup is a cool place in Western Australia. It's also known by names like Port Bouvard and Avalon. This residential suburb is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) southwest of Mandurah. It's also about 87 kilometers (54 miles) south-southwest of Perth, the state capital.

Wannanup is almost completely surrounded by water. The Indian Ocean is to its west, the Harvey Estuary to its east, and the Dawesville Channel to its south. It's part of a special "island" area. This island was created when the Dawesville Channel was built.

Wannanup is an old Aboriginal name. It was once used for the area known as Florida. When the Dawesville Channel was built, the suburb was split. The southern part became Dawesville. The northern part was officially named Wannanup in 1996.
