Wargatie Lake is a beautiful glacial lake located in Manitoba, Canada. It was once known by a different name, Dummy Lake. A glacial lake is a lake that was formed by the movement of huge sheets of ice, called glaciers, long ago.

About Wargatie Lake

Wargatie Lake is found in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is a natural body of water that was shaped by glaciers. The lake covers an area of about 1.6 square kilometers. At its deepest point, the lake is about 12 meters (39 feet) deep.

Animals and Plants

The Municipality of Harrison Park helps to look after Wargatie Lake. They make sure people can enjoy activities like fishing there. You can find several types of fish in the lake. These include northern pike, walleye, and yellow perch.

The lake is also home to many northern leopard frogs. These frogs are very important to Canada's wildlife. They are listed as a "Species of Special Concern." This means they need extra protection to help them survive. Wargatie Lake is thought to be a key place for these frogs. They use it to stay safe and warm during the winter months. This is called overwintering.

Why the Name Changed

The lake was named after the Wargatie family. Their home was built near the lake in 1910. Some members of the Wargatie family could not hear or speak. Because of this, the lake was first called Dummy Lake.

However, the word "dummy" can be seen as disrespectful. In the year 2000, the name was officially changed. It became Wargatie Lake to honor the family in a better way. This new name celebrates the family's history more respectfully.
