A Special Design
The Warm Mineral Springs Motel was designed by Victor Lundy. He was part of a group of architects called the Sarasota School of Architecture. This group was famous for creating modern and interesting buildings. The motel is located at 12597 South Tamiami Trail.
What Makes It Unique?
One of the most famous parts of the motel is its roof. It looks like a "mushroom champagne glass" and has glass walls. These glass walls let guests see the stars at night. Because of its amazing design, the American Institute of Architects gave it a special award in 1958.
The Architect's Idea
Victor Lundy wrote about his design in 1958. He wanted the building to look like the idea of the Fountain of Youth. He also wanted it to copy the natural, growing shape of a tree.
He found the answer by using special precast concrete shapes. These shapes were called "hyperbolic paraboloids." They were arranged in a U-shape. Three of these shapes were lifted higher to form the motel's sign, like a piece of art.
Inside the Motel
The front desk area of the motel is still the original one from 1958. This means it looks just like it did when the motel first opened! A swimming pool area was added later in 1990 for guests to enjoy.
