Exploring Warm Springs, Montana
Warm Springs is home to the Montana State Hospital. This is a special hospital run by the state of Montana. It helps people who need long-term care for their mental health. The hospital was first started by the government of Montana Territory in 1877. The State of Montana bought the hospital in 1912. It was renamed Warm Springs State Hospital in 1965.
The Famous Warm Springs
The "warm springs" that give the community its name are found right on the hospital grounds. Hot water naturally flows out from a limestone cone. This cone is about 40 feet (12 meters) tall. Native Americans used to call this area the "Lodge of the Whitetailed Deer." This is how the nearby Deer Lodge Valley got its name.
