Warmadewa dynasty facts for kids
The Warmadewa dynasty was a group of rulers who governed the island of Bali a long time ago. They were important in Bali's history.
History of the Warmadewa Rulers
It's a bit tricky to know exactly how all the Warmadewa rulers were related. When we say 'dynasty' here, it means they all used the name 'Warmadewa' in their titles. It doesn't necessarily mean they were all from the same family line.
Many historians believe the Warmadewa dynasty started with a ruler named Sri Kesari Warmadewa in the 900s. We know this because his name, 'Warmadewa', appears on an old stone called the Belanjong pillar. He was the first Balinese king known to use this name. Even though part of the name is hard to read now, experts think it originally said 'Warmadewa'.
The Warmadewa rulers were in power for many years. The last known ruler to use the Warmadewa title was King Udayana Warmadewa. His name is found on an inscription from April 6, 1011. Many historians believe that Udayana Warmadewa was the father of Airlangga. Airlangga later became a very famous king on the island of Java in the early 1000s. This connection is mentioned in an old story about Airlangga from 1041.
