What is the Warner Home?
The Warner Home is a large, old building found in the northeastern part of St. Albans. It sits at the corner of High Street and Isham Avenue. This building has three stories and is made of brick. It also has a sloped roof.
A Look at the Building
The building has a very grand look, especially from the front.
Outside Features
The front of the Warner Home faces west. It has a huge porch-like area in the middle. This part goes up two stories high. It has a fancy roof and is held up by tall, fluted columns. Fluted means they have grooves running down them. On each side of this main porch, there are smaller porches. These are also supported by columns, just like the big ones. The windows on the building are set in rounded openings. They have brick frames around them and wooden ledges at the bottom.
Inside the Home
Even though the building has been updated over the years, many of its original features are still there. This includes changes made in the 1950s and 1960s. When the building was turned into homes in 1987, many of the original rooms were kept. The main entrance area was also restored to how it looked before.
A Home for Children
The Warner Home was first started in St. Albans in 1882. It was made possible by money left by a man named Chauncey Warner from Cambridge, Vermont.
From Orphanage to Homes
The first Warner Home was in a different building in the city. That building was much older and had a style called Italianate. Sadly, it burned down in 1900. The building you see today was built after that fire. It cost about $20,000 to build. This money came from the last of Chauncey Warner's gift and from people who donated money.
When it was first built, the Warner Home had many rooms for the children. There were bedrooms where they slept. There were also classrooms for learning and playrooms for fun. People at the time said it was one of the most important homes for children in northern New England. In 1987 and 1988, the building was changed into separate apartments, called condominiums. This allowed many families to live there while keeping the building's history alive.
