The Warner Valley Ranger Station is a special building located in the southern part of Lassen Volcanic National Park. It's also known as the Warner Valley Patrol Cabin or Quarters 304. This station is found on the road that leads to the Drakesbad Guest Ranch.
Built in 1926, this building is quite unique because of how it was made. Even though it looks like a log cabin, it was actually built using stacked pieces of wood called "milled 2x6 lumber" to create its walls. It's the only building known to be built this way in the western parts of the National Park Service system. The way the wood pieces fit together at the corners makes a cool design.
This ranger station was one of the first three buildings the Park Service built in Lassen Volcanic National Park after it became a park in 1916. The other two buildings were the Summit Lake Ranger Station, which is also a historic site, and the Butte Lake Ranger Station, which is no longer standing.
What Does the Ranger Station Look Like?
The Warner Valley Ranger Station is a building with one and a half stories. It measures about 24 feet (7.3 meters) on each side. Inside, there's a big living room that is 24 feet (7.3 meters) long and 12 feet (3.7 meters) wide. This room has a cozy stone fireplace.
The station also has a kitchen and a bedroom on the first floor. Upstairs, in the attic, there are two more rooms. The roof is very steep and covered with green cedar shingles.
Building Challenges and Repairs
When the building was first finished in 1926, it couldn't handle the heavy snow. So, it had to be largely rebuilt in 1927. Later, in 1999, the station was renovated again. This time, workers fixed problems caused by its unusual building style. They made sure the cabin was safe for earthquakes and added a bathroom to the back. During this work, they also found signs that there used to be a porch at the front of the building.
Why is it a Historic Place?
The Warner Valley Ranger Station is considered an important historic site. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 3, 1978. Being on this list means it's recognized for its special history and architecture, helping to protect it for future generations.
