The Warnke Covered Bridge, also called Warnke Bridge, is a special old bridge. It crosses Swamp Creek in Harrison Township, Preble County, Ohio. You can find it northeast of Lewisburg. This bridge was built between 1895 and 1896. A man named Everett S. Sherman built it. The bridge is 51 feet long. In 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site.

History of the Warnke Bridge

Building a New Bridge

In 1895, a big flood hit the area. The flood damaged an old steel bridge that was in the same spot. Because of this, a new bridge was needed. Everett S. Sherman was chosen to build it. He built a "Childs Truss covered Bridge." This is a special way of building bridges using wood.

Where Materials Came From

Sherman bought the large stones for the bridge's supports from a quarry in Lewisburg. A quarry is a place where stones are dug out of the ground. The bridge was named after a family who lived very close by.

Sherman's Last Project

The Warnke Bridge was the very last bridge Everett S. Sherman ever built. After he finished the bridge, he moved to Richmond, Indiana. He passed away not long after that.

Bridge Facts and Figures

Cost and Repairs

When the Warnke Bridge was first built, it cost $459. That was a lot of money back then! In 2008, the bridge needed some important repairs. This work cost $240,924.25. These repairs helped keep the old bridge safe and strong.

Covered Bridges in Preble County

Long ago, Preble County had about 50 covered bridges. These bridges were popular because the roof protected the wooden parts from rain and snow. Today, only seven of these old covered bridges are still standing. The Warnke Covered Bridge is one of them.
