Warren Barguil's Cycling Journey
Starting Out as a Cyclist
Warren Barguil was born in Hennebont, a town in Brittany, France. He began his professional cycling journey in 2011. He rode as a "stagiaire," which is like an intern, for a team called FST. During this time, he won a stage in the Tour de l'Avenir, a race for young riders. He also finished 5th overall in that race.
The next year, 2012, was very successful for him. He won the entire Tour de l'Avenir race! He also came in second place overall in the Tour des Pays de Savoie. These early wins showed everyone that Warren was a very talented climber.
Riding for Argos–Shimano (2013–2017)
First Big Wins (2013)
In 2013, Warren officially joined the Argos–Shimano team as a full-time rider. This was a big year for him. He achieved his biggest wins yet by taking two stages in the Vuelta a España. This is one of the three biggest cycling races in the world, called Grand Tours.
Building Experience (2014)
In 2014, Warren started getting more top results. He finished 8th in races like La Drôme Classic and Strade Bianche. He also placed 9th overall in the Volta a Catalunya. His team wanted him to focus on the overall standings in the Vuelta a España. He finished 8th overall in that race, which was a great achievement.
First Tour de France (2015)
The year 2015 was special because it was Warren's first time focusing on the Tour de France. He worked hard to get ready for it. He finished 12th in the Tour de Suisse before the Tour. He started the Tour de France very well, even being in 8th place overall after one stage. He finished his first Tour de France in 14th place overall.
Tough Times and Strong Finishes (2016)
In January 2016, Warren and five of his teammates were hit by a car while training in Spain. Luckily, all the riders were okay. Despite this, Warren had some strong results later that year. He finished 6th in the Liège–Bastogne–Liège race and 9th in La Flèche Wallonne. He also finished 3rd overall in the Tour de Suisse. In the Tour de France, he started strong but finished 23rd overall.
Tour de France Hero (2017)

The 2017 season was Warren Barguil's most famous year. He finished 8th in Paris–Nice and 6th in La Flèche Wallonne. After a crash, he recovered and came back strong for the Tour de France.
In the Tour, he earned the polka dot jersey (for the best climber) after Stage 9. He then won Stage 13 in a thrilling sprint finish. This was his first Tour de France stage win, and it happened on Bastille Day, a French national holiday! He became the first Frenchman to win a Tour stage on Bastille Day since 2005.
He wasn't done yet! He also won Stage 18, which finished on the tough Col d'Izoard mountain. After this win, he had so many points that he was guaranteed to win the mountains classification. He became the "King of the Mountains" at the 2017 Tour de France.
However, later that year, his team removed him from the Vuelta a España. This was because he disagreed with the team's plans and wanted to ride for himself in the mountains.
Joining Fortuneo–Samsic (2018–Present)
New Team, New Goals (2018)
In 2018, Warren joined a new French team, Fortuneo–Samsic. He started the season with races like Tour La Provence and Paris–Nice. He also finished 3rd in the Grand Prix de Wallonie.
French National Champion (2019)
After a difficult start to 2019, Warren achieved a huge victory: he won the French National Road Race Championships! This was a very important win for him. He then rode the Tour de France again, aiming for stage wins. He attacked many times in the mountains and showed great form, finishing 10th overall in the race.
