Warren Eugene Mitchell Sr. was an American college basketball coach. He was born on April 1, 1933, and passed away on October 15, 2020. Mitchell is best known for coaching the William & Mary Tribe men's basketball team. He led the team for six seasons, from 1966 to 1972.

Early Life and Playing Career

Warren Mitchell was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. He grew up there and attended E. C. Glass High School. After high school, he continued his basketball journey in college.

College Basketball

Mitchell played college basketball as a guard. He first played for the Lynchburg Hornets during the 1953–1954 season. Later, he transferred to the University of Richmond. He played for the Richmond Spiders from 1954 to 1957.

Player Achievements

During his time as a player, Warren Mitchell achieved some important honors. In 1957, he was named first-team all-state. This means he was recognized as one of the best players in the state. He was also selected for the first-team all-SoCon in the same year. The Southern Conference is a group of colleges that play sports against each other.

Coaching Career

After his playing days, Warren Mitchell became a basketball coach. He coached at different levels, starting with high school.

High School Coaching

Mitchell began his coaching career at Newport News High School in Virginia. He coached there from 1960 to 1964. This was his first experience leading a team.

From 1964 to 1966, Mitchell worked as an assistant coach. He joined the coaching staff at Davidson College. As an assistant, he helped the head coach and worked with the players to improve their skills.
