The Story of Wasabröd
The first Wasabröd bakery was opened in Skellefteå by a person named Karl Edvard Lundström. In 1931, a new, modern bakery was built in Filipstad. This bakery became the main place where Wasabröd makes its crispbread today.
Wasabröd started selling its crispbread to other countries in the 1940s. They opened their first office outside Sweden in Denmark in 1965. Then, in 1967, they built their first bakery in another country, in Celle, Germany. Today, most of the crispbread Wasabröd makes is sold outside Sweden.
The company's founder, K. E. Lundström, had his own bakery before starting Wasabröd. The company was first called AB Skellefteå spisbrödsfabrik in 1919, named after its hometown. Later, the Filipstad bakery became the main part of the company. In 1934, it was renamed AB Wasa spisbrödsfabrik. This name was shortened to AB Wasabröd in 1964.
The name "Wasa" came from a special crispbread product called Vasaknäcke. This product had a picture of King Gustavus Vasa on it. The company has used symbols like a royal crown and a special design called a "garb" (which looks like a bundle of wheat) in its advertising. This garb symbol is linked to the Vasa dynasty, a famous royal family in Sweden.
Wasabröd Today
The Barilla company's bakery in Filipstad is quite large. It has 310 employees who work there. Every year, this factory produces about 33,000 tonnes of crispbread. Between 2009 and 2014, Barilla invested a lot of money to make the factory's equipment more modern.
What Kinds of Crispbread Does Wasabröd Make?
Wasabröd makes many different types of crispbread. The original crispbread is made from rye grain. But they also make products using other grains like wheat and even sesame seeds.
Serving the Royal Family
Wasabröd has a special honor: they are a "Purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden". This means they are an official supplier to the Swedish royal family.
