A popular Wasabröd crispbread called "Wasa Husman"

Wasabröd makes a special type of crunchy bread called crispbread. It's popular in Sweden and other Nordic countries. This company started way back in 1919. Their very first bakery was in a Swedish city called Skellefteå. Since 1983, companies from other countries have owned Wasabröd. First, a Swiss company called Sandoz owned it. Then, in 1999, an Italian food company, Barilla, took over.

A Crunchy History of Wasabröd

Wasabröd's first bakery was in Skellefteå. It was started by Karl Edvard Lundström. In 1931, they opened a new, modern bakery in Filipstad. This bakery became the company's main home. Wasabröd bought other bakeries in Sweden over time.

Growing Beyond Sweden

They began selling their crispbread to other countries in the 1940s. In 1965, they opened a branch in Denmark. Two years later, in 1967, they built their first bakery outside Sweden. This new bakery was in Celle, Germany. Today, Wasabröd sells about 80% of its crispbread outside Sweden.

How the Name Wasa Began

Karl Edvard Lundström had his own bakery since 1915. The company officially started in 1919. It was first called AB Skellefteå spisbrödsfabrik, named after its hometown. The Filipstad bakery became the main part of the company. In 1934, it changed its name to AB Wasa spisbrödsfabrik. This was shortened to AB Wasabröd in 1964.

The name "Wasa" first came from a product called "Vasaknäcke." This product showed a picture of King Gustavus Vasa. The company often uses a royal crown in its ads. They also use a special symbol called a "garb," which looks like a bundle of wheat. This symbol is linked to the Vasa dynasty.

Modern Production at Filipstad

The Barilla company owns the bakery in Filipstad. About 440 people work there. They make 33,000 tons of crispbread every year. Between 2009 and 2014, Barilla invested 150 million Swedish Kronor. This money helped to update the factory's machines.

Delicious Crispbread Products

Wasabröd makes many different kinds of crispbread. The first crispbread was made from rye grain. Today, their products also use sesame seeds, wheat, and other grains. Like matzo, Wasabröd's crispbread can stay fresh for a very long time.

Serving the Royal Court

Wasabröd has a special honor. They are a Purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden. This means they supply crispbread to the Swedish royal family.
