Washburn Lake is a large lake in Cass County, Minnesota, USA. It covers about 1,554 acres (6.29 km2) of water. The lake is located about three miles northwest of a town called Outing, Minnesota. It sits at an elevation of about 1,316 feet (401 m) above sea level.

Washburn Lake is special because it has three different parts, like three connected bowls. You can find a public entrance at the south end of the eastern part of the lake. This spot is shared with the Clinton Converse DNR Forestry Campground. The lake was named after an early lumberman who worked in the area.

Exploring Washburn Lake's Depths

Washburn Lake is quite deep in some areas. Its deepest point goes down about 111 feet (34 m). However, nearly half of the lake (about 48%) is shallow, only 15 feet (4.6 m) deep or less.

What's on the Lake Bottom?

In the shallow parts of the lake, the bottom is mostly made of sand and gravel. But you can also find areas with rocks, big boulders, and soft muck. These different types of lake bottom create homes for various creatures.

Life in the Lake: Plants and Fish

The plants growing in Washburn Lake are very important. They help keep the lake healthy and provide homes for fish.

Amazing Aquatic Plants

Many different kinds of plants grow in the water.

  • Emergent plants grow partly in the water and partly above it.
  • An example is bulrush, which is common along the shoreline.
  • These plants are super important for protecting the shoreline.
  • They also help keep the water clean.
  • Plus, they are great places for fish like bass and panfish to lay their eggs.
  • However, there are fewer of these plants where homes are built along the shore.
  • Submerged plants grow completely under the water.
  • These plants provide food and hiding spots for fish and other animals in the lake.
