Washington Benavides (born March 3, 1930 – died September 24, 2017) was a talented Uruguayan poet, professor, and musician. He was known for his amazing poems and for teaching literature.
Life and Early Works
Washington Benavides was born in Tacuarembó, a city in Uruguay. In the 1950s, he started sharing his writings in a magazine called Asir.
His first book, Tata Vizcacha, came out in 1955. It was a funny story that made fun of different people in his hometown. After this, he focused a lot on writing poetry. He became one of the most important poets of his time in Uruguay.
Poetry and Music
Benavides was not just a writer; he was also a teacher. He taught literature to high school students. Later, he taught at the University of the Republic, Uruguay, in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Letters. He also worked in radio, sharing his ideas and stories with many people.
His poems were so good that many musicians turned them into songs. Famous artists like Daniel Viglietti, Alfredo Zitarrosa, Héctor Numa Moraes, and Eduardo Darnauchans used his words for their music. Some popular songs based on his poems include "El instrumento", "Como un jazmín del país", and "Milonga del Cordobés". This shows how much his words touched people.
During a time when Uruguay was ruled by a government that had a lot of control (called a dictatorship), Benavides believed that popular music could help people think about new ideas and changes. He used his art to inspire others.
Washington Benavides passed away in Montevideo, Uruguay, on September 24, 2017, when he was 87 years old.
