Watch My Chops (also known as Corneil & Bernie) is a fun French animated series! It's all about a super smart talking dog named Corneil and his "dog sitter" friend, Bernie Barges. The show was made in France, and the English voices were recorded in London.

The series was created by Millimages. It first aired in the United States on Nicktoons. In the UK, you could watch it on CBBC from 2003 to 2007. In France, it started on France 3 in December 2003. The main voices you hear are Keith Wickham, Ben Small, Dian Perry, Dan Russell, and Laurence Bouvard. There were 52 episodes made originally.

The show's original name in French is Corneil et Bernie. In the UK, it's called Watch My Chops, which comes from Corneil's special catchphrase. In the United States and Australia, it kept the name Corneil & Bernie. You can even find a DVD of the first season! In 2014, the show came back with new episodes. These new episodes use Flash animation and have a fresh intro.

What's the Story About?

Corneil is no ordinary dog! He's incredibly smart. He can read and write perfectly, and he's much cleverer than most people. But Corneil has a secret: he knows that being a pampered pet is the best life ever. So, he tries his hardest to keep his amazing skills hidden from his owners, John and Beth.

However, his plan starts to go wrong when John and Beth hire Bernie Barges to look after him. Bernie isn't the brightest kid, but he accidentally discovers Corneil's secret! Even though Corneil and Bernie often argue, they become friends. Corneil frequently has to use his super brain to help Bernie out of all sorts of tricky situations.

Most episodes are about Corneil trying to keep his secret safe. The only person who knows he can talk is Bernie, the dog sitter. Bernie found out by accident. Since Bernie isn't very smart and sometimes doesn't think about others, he often pretends to be Corneil's "voice." He uses Corneil's secret to get what he wants, even if Corneil doesn't agree.

In the newer episodes from 2014, Corneil and Bernie go on even crazier adventures! They might hunt for a legendary monster, fight a computer virus, or even try to stop the end of the world. In these newer stories, more people find out about Corneil's secret, and he starts to worry less about being discovered.

Meet the Characters

Main Characters

  • Corneil (voiced by Keith Wickham) – He's the super smart dog with a northern English accent. Corneil loves being comfortable in his apartment. He can talk, read, and write, but he tries to keep this a secret. He doesn't want humans to treat him differently. When his owners are around, he acts like a normal, loyal dog. But when he's alone or with Bernie, he acts like a human. He might answer the phone, cook, solve math problems, or even think about big ideas. He usually helps Bernie or gets him out of trouble.
  • Bernie Barges (voiced by Ben Small) – Bernie is Corneil's best friend and dog sitter. He's full of ideas and very imaginative, but he's not very smart. Sometimes he can be stubborn or a bit selfish, but he usually means well. He's a great friend for Corneil because they are so different! Bernie was just supposed to be a dog sitter, but he found a true companion in Corneil. If Corneil doesn't want to help, Bernie sometimes threatens to tell everyone Corneil's secret!
  • John and Beth (voiced by Dan Russell and Laurence Bouvard) – These are Corneil's rich owners. John works as an auctioneer, and Beth is the main editor of a newspaper. They are a modern, energetic, and a little bit quirky couple. They love Corneil like he's their own child and care for him a lot. They also trust Bernie quite a bit, making him their favorite dog sitter for Corneil.
  • Uncle Rico (voiced by Dan Russell) – Bernie's uncle. He didn't finish high school and used to be a boxer. He had to stop boxing after a big knockout. Now, he works as a caretaker and often deals with his nephew, Bernie.

Other Characters

  • Romeo (voiced by Dan Russell) – He's the captain of the school football team. Romeo is very popular with girls. Bernie looks up to Romeo and wishes he could be like him. Romeo doesn't take Bernie seriously, but he can be friendly sometimes. Romeo doesn't like Corneil, thinking he's just a silly dog.
  • Martha (voiced by Laurence Bouvard) – Another one of Bernie's classmates. Martha is very smart and often doubts Bernie's wild stories. She works on the school newspaper and has many causes she wants to support. She's good at finding out information.
  • Mrs. Martin (voiced by Dian Perry (season 1), Laurence Bouvard (season 2)) – She is Bernie's strict school principal. She wants her school to be amazing, but Bernie often causes problems that mess up her plans. Because of this, she thinks Bernie is a big troublemaker and often gives him detention. She sometimes punishes students even if they didn't do anything wrong.
  • Mrs. Solo (voiced by Dian Perry) – One of Bernie and Corneil's grumpy neighbors in their apartment building. She doesn't like them because they often "get in her way." Once, she hit Corneil with her umbrella, and Corneil made Bernie take her to court!
  • Karen (voiced by Laurence Bouvard) – One of Bernie's classmates. She's pretty and smart, and you often see her reading a book. Even though Karen seemed to dislike Bernie in some episodes, a picture from the show's creators suggests she might marry Bernie someday!
  • Laura Ryan – Another one of Bernie's classmates.
  • Julie (voiced by Laurence Bouvard) – One of Bernie's classmates.
  • Frank – Romeo’s friend and one of Bernie's classmates.
  • Joseph Scally
