Waterfall is a small, unincorporated community located on the west coast of Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a group of homes and businesses, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's about 60 miles west of Ketchikan.

History of Waterfall

The main business in Waterfall used to be the Waterfall Cannery. This cannery was built in 1912. It was a place where workers processed salmon caught in the nearby waters. They would clean, prepare, and can the fish so it could be sent to other places.

From Cannery to Resort

The Waterfall Cannery operated for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors in 1973. After it closed, the cannery building was completely changed and updated. It became the Waterfall Resort. Today, this resort is a popular place for sport fishing. People come from all over to catch fish like salmon and halibut.

Getting to Waterfall

Waterfall is unique because it is not connected to the main road system on Prince of Wales Island. This means you cannot drive there by car. Visitors who want to go to the Waterfall Resort usually arrive by floatplane. A floatplane is a special type of airplane that can land on water. These planes fly to Waterfall from Ketchikan, offering amazing views along the way.
