Waterloo is a small, quiet place in Fayette County, Indiana, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Waterloo Township.
History of Waterloo
How Waterloo Was Started
Waterloo was officially planned and marked out in 1841. This process is called "platting." When a town is platted, its streets, lots, and public areas are drawn on a map. The community was named after the township it is located in, Waterloo Township.
Tornadoes and Resilience
Waterloo has faced some powerful storms over the years. On May 14, 1883, a strong tornado hit the community. It destroyed almost all the buildings, leaving only three standing. One person was injured, and about 75 people lost their homes.
Years later, on April 25, 1961, another very strong tornado, an F4, struck Waterloo. This tornado also caused a lot of damage, destroying many homes and buildings. Luckily, even with all the destruction, no one in Waterloo was killed during this storm. The community showed great strength in rebuilding after these events.
