This building is special because it's the only school left in southern New Hampshire that was built in the unique Queen Anne style. For many years, it was the main high school for Epping, from 1888 until 1966. Because of its history and special style, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

About Watson Academy: A Historic School Building

Watson Academy is located in the middle of Epping, New Hampshire. You can find it on Academy Street, between Prescott Road and Main Street. The building has a rectangular shape. It also has two smaller sections that stick out from the front, making it look wider.

What Does Watson Academy Look Like?

The outside of the school is covered with a mix of wooden boards and special fish-scale shaped shingles. These shingles look a bit like fish scales! The building has many different roof shapes and window sizes. This mix of shapes and sizes is typical of the Queen Anne style of architecture. It also has some decorative wooden parts that are called Stick style details.

When it was first built, Watson Academy had fancy brick chimneys and a round tower on top. These parts were removed a long time ago. Even without them, the building still shows off its unique old style.

The History of Watson Academy

Watson Academy was built in 1883. It's the only school building in southern New Hampshire that still shows the Queen Anne style of architecture. A talented architect named Charles E. Joy designed the school. He was from Dover, New Hampshire.

The school was built thanks to money left by a local businessman named Daniel Watson Ladd. He wanted to make sure that students whose families couldn't afford private schools could still get a good high school education. For the first five years, the school was run by a group of private trustees. After that, it was given to the town of Epping. It served as Epping's high school for a very long time, from 1888 until 1966.
