Waugh is a small, unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Alabama. An unincorporated community is a place that does not have its own local government. Waugh is located where two important roads meet: U.S. Route 80 and Alabama State Route 126. It is about 15.3 miles (24.6 km) east of the city of Montgomery.

History of Waugh

Early Days and the Post Office

Waugh had its own post office for many years. It opened in 1893 and helped people send and receive mail. The post office served the community until it closed in 1956.

Montgomery County Training School

For a time, Waugh was home to an important school. This was the Montgomery County Training School. It was a special school for African American boys and girls. At this school, students learned useful skills. Boys learned about farming and agriculture. Girls learned homemaking skills. This helped them prepare for their futures.

The Federal Road and Lucas Tavern

Waugh is located along an old, historic path called the Federal Road. This road was very important for travel in early Alabama. It connected different parts of the state.

Waugh was also once the site of a famous place called Lucas Tavern. A tavern was like a hotel and restaurant for travelers in the past. Lucas Tavern was first built west of Line Creek. This creek was the original border between the Mississippi Territory and the land of the Creek Nation.

James Abercrombie first opened the tavern. Later, in 1821, Walter B. Lucas took over. He became the new owner and operator. Today, a special historical marker shows where the tavern originally stood.

General Lafayette's Visit

In 1978, Lucas Tavern was moved to Old Alabama Town. This is a historic village in Montgomery. Now, the old tavern building serves as a visitor and information center.

A very famous person once stayed at Lucas Tavern. In April 1825, General Lafayette spent the night there. He was a French hero who helped America win its independence. He was on his way to Montgomery when he stopped at the tavern.
