History of the Waupun Heritage Museum
What is a Carnegie Library?
The Waupun Carnegie Library is an example of a "Carnegie library." These libraries were built with money donated by Andrew Carnegie, a very rich businessman. He believed that everyone should have access to books and learning. He helped build thousands of libraries across the world.
Building a Community Landmark
Construction on the Waupun Carnegie Library began on October 11, 1904. Workers finished building it about a year later, on October 22, 1905. For many years, this beautiful building was the main library for the people of Waupun.
From Library to Museum
The building served as the town's library until 1968. That year, a brand new library was finished, and the books moved to their new home. In 1971, the old library building was leased to the Waupun Historical Society. This group helps preserve the history of Waupun. They turned the old library into the Waupun Heritage Museum.
Recognized as a Historic Place
Because of its importance and history, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 4, 1979. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to history. It was also added to the State Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it's recognized as a significant historical site in Wisconsin.
