Waveny Park facts for kids
Waveny Park is a beautiful park located in New Canaan, Connecticut. It's famous for its main building, often called "the castle," which was built in 1912. This castle is surrounded by about 300 acres (1.2 km2) of open fields, peaceful ponds, and fun trails to explore.
The architect who designed the castle was William Tubby. The lovely gardens and outdoor areas around the house were planned by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr.. In 2019, the whole property was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's a special place recognized for its history.
The castle has even been on TV and in movies! It was used as the outside of 'Cortlandt Manor' in the TV show All My Children. You might also recognize it from the 2004 movie The Stepford Wives.
Exploring Waveny Park
Waveny Park has clear borders: Farm Road to the North, the Merritt Parkway to the South, South Avenue to the East, and Lapham Road to the West.
Over the years, more buildings have been added to the park's land. These include New Canaan High School, the Waveny LifeCare Network, a swimming center, and even paddle tennis courts. Many people from all over Fairfield County enjoy visiting the park and using its facilities. Sometimes, there's a small yearly fee to use certain parts of the park.
How Waveny Park Came to Be
The man who built Waveny House was Lewis Henry Lapham. He was one of the people who started the company Texaco. Lewis Lapham and his family spent their summers at Waveny for many years.
In 1967, the Lapham family generously gave most of the park's land to the Town of New Canaan. They also sold Waveny House and its surrounding 300 acres (1.2 km2) to the town for $1,500,000. This is how Waveny Park became a public park for everyone to enjoy!
