What is Waverly Like?
Waverly is mostly a farming area. You'll find houses along County Road 15, surrounded by large ranches. It's located north of Fort Collins and west of Wellington. The main public buildings are a fire station and the old Waverly School.
In recent years, more homes have been built near Waverly. Local people have worked hard to manage this growth and prevent nearby towns from taking over their area.
A Look at Waverly's History
People first settled in the Waverly area in the 1880s. They mostly worked in ranching and grew sugar beets. In 1903, a plan was made to build a town, and it was named "Waverly" after novels by Walter Scott. However, the town stayed very small.
At one point, Waverly was officially a town with its own leaders. It had a few stores, a church, a post office, and a school built in 1918. The girls' basketball team from Waverly School even won state championships in 1939 and 1940!
In 1960, the Waverly school joined the larger Poudre School District. The building became an elementary school. It closed in 1992, but it was still used by the school district for 12 years as a teen program center. In 2004, the building was sold. Today, it serves as a learning center for teens, a meeting place for a church, and sometimes a community hall.
Managing Growth in Waverly
As nearby cities like Fort Collins and Wellington grew, new housing developments started to appear around Waverly. This led the community to work together to control how much the area changed.
In 2001, the Waverly Community Group was formed. They worked to make sure that any new plans for roads or growth would not harm their community. In 2002, they successfully convinced the town of Wellington to change its growth plans to avoid taking over Waverly. By 2004, the group was recognized by Larimer County as important. This means the county now talks with them about any new plans or rules for the area.
