History
Wawpecong was officially started in 1849. When it was first created, people often spelled its name Waupecong.
The name Wawpecong comes from the Miami-Illinois language. This language was spoken by Native American tribes in the area. The name means "shell-bark hickories," which are a type of tree.
A post office was opened in Wawpecong in 1849. This office helped people send and receive mail. The post office stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1907.
