Discovering Waxpool, Virginia

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community like Waxpool is a place where people live and work, but it doesn't have its own separate government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the larger county it's in, which in this case is Loudoun County. This means the county provides services like roads, police, and schools for everyone in Waxpool.

The Story Behind Waxpool's Name

Have you ever wondered how places get their names? Waxpool got its unique name from the soil found there! Much of the ground in this area is a special type of clay called Iredell clay loam. People who lived there called this soil "wax land." This was because the subsoil, which is the layer of soil just below the surface, felt waxy. So, the name "Waxpool" comes from this waxy soil.

A Look Back at Waxpool's History

Early Days: Store and Post Office

Long ago, Waxpool was a bit different. It used to have a general store and a post office all in one building. This store was said to have opened in 1947, and the post office started in 1953. These places were important for the people living in Waxpool, as they could buy supplies and send letters without traveling far. Both the store and the post office served the community until 1966.

Baseball Fun at William D. Parsell Field

Today, Waxpool is home to a baseball field called William D. Parsell Field. This field used to be known simply as "Waxpool Baseball Field." It was renamed to honor William D. Parsell, who owned the land. He allowed the Dulles Little League to use the field for their baseball teams, the Waxpool Mustangs and the Waxpool Orioles, from the early 1970s to the early 1990s. It's a place where many young athletes played and learned the game.

Farming in Waxpool

In the 1970s, Waxpool was home to three dairy farms. These farms were important for producing milk and other dairy products. Over time, things changed. In the 1990s, two of these farms were bought and set aside for building new communities. This means that new homes and neighborhoods were planned for those areas. Today, one dairy farm still remains in Waxpool, located near the intersection of Waxpool Road and Belmont Ridge Road.
