How the Game Was Played
Every week, three different teams would compete. They took part in various athletic events. Teams earned points for winning each event.
Earning Points in Challenges
The first event was worth one point. The second event gave two points. The final event awarded three points. The team with the most points after all three events won the day.
Winners would then come back. They competed against other winning teams later on. Prizes and trophies were also given to the winning teams.
Tournament Structure
The show had a clear competition plan. There were 17 weeks of regular games. After that, there were 6 weeks of Quarterfinals. One Quarterfinal round had only two teams.
Next came 2 weeks of Semi-Finals. Finally, there was a big Championship Final. Only one match was played each week. In the Championship finals, which aired in April 1977, the team from Oregon beat the team from Indiana.
When the Show Aired
Way Out Games changed its broadcast time several times. It started on Saturdays at 12:30 P.M. Eastern time. This was from September 1976 to January 1977.
Time Slot Changes
From February to April 1977, the show moved. It aired a half-hour later, at 1:00 P.M. Eastern. Then, from April to September 1977, it aired on Sundays. The Sunday time slot was 7:00 A.M.
Some local CBS stations even stopped showing Way Out Games. They did this partway through its run. They chose to show other programs instead. These included syndicated series like Soul Train or sports events. This was common for shows on Saturday mornings after noon or on Sunday mornings.
