Wayland is a small community located in Portage County, Ohio, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's not officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Paris Township. Wayland has its own post office and is considered part of the Akron metropolitan area.

The Story of Wayland's Name

Wayland has had a few different names over the years! When it was first settled, it was called Newport. At that time, it was an important stop along the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal, a waterway used for transporting goods.

Later, the community's name changed to Parisville. Eventually, it was called Cyclone. However, this name caused some confusion for people traveling by train. When the train conductor announced "Cyclone," passengers sometimes got mixed up.

Because of this confusion, the people living there decided to change the name one more time. In 1900, they chose the name Wayland. This new name was chosen to honor Wayland Hoyt, who was a Baptist minister in the area at that time.
