Wea is a small place in Miami County, Kansas, United States. It is called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own city government like a town or city. Wea is part of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area.
History of Wea
Did you know that Wea got its name from a Native American group called the Wea Tribe? The Wea Tribe was part of a bigger group known as the Illiniwek Confederacy.
In 1832, the Wea Tribe, along with the Piankishaw, Peoria, and Kaskaskia Tribes, moved to this land, which was set aside for them as a reservation.
However, things changed in 1854 with something called the Kansas–Nebraska Act. This act allowed people to move into these areas. Soon, people who didn't own the land, called squatters, started moving onto the tribal lands. They pressured the tribes to give up their land. By 1867, these four tribes had to move again to what was then called Indian Territory.
The local post office in Wea closed its doors in 1903.
