Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Webe Celine Kadima was born in 1958. She is a professor of Biochemistry at the Medical School of the Université Notre Dame du Kasayi (UKA). Before this, she was a professor of chemistry at the State University of New York at Oswego.

Early Life and Education

Webe Kadima was born in Burundi. When she was four years old, her family moved to the Democratic Republic of Congo. She studied chemistry for a year at the University of Kinshasa.

Later, she moved to Montréal, Canada. There, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. She also received a Master of Science degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Montreal. During this time, her father, who had diabetes, passed away from complications of the disease. This sad event inspired her to focus her studies on health-related chemistry.

She then moved to Edmonton, Canada. At the University of Alberta, she earned her PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in bioanalytical chemistry. This field uses chemistry to study biological things. Her PhD research looked into how the metal cadmium can be harmful to red blood cells.

Career and Research

After finishing her studies, Professor Kadima worked in different research and teaching jobs. She eventually became a professor at the State University of New York at Oswego.

In 2004, she went back to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for a special research period called a sabbatical. She worked on projects studying plants used to treat diabetes in the DRC. She wanted to find natural ways to help people with diabetes.

Helping Communities Through Science

Professor Kadima started a non-profit organization called the Bioactive Botanical Research Institute. Its goal was to study medicinal plants from the Congo. The institute aimed to create medicines that were affordable, worked well, and were safe.

She also worked to create a program that allowed students from Africa to exchange and study at the State University of New York at Oswego. This helped students learn from different places.

In 2010, she received a special grant of $200,000 from the National Science Foundation. This money helped her study how to encourage more women to join science fields.

Important Discoveries

Professor Kadima has published many scientific papers. In 1983, she shared the results of her PhD research. This work looked at how cadmium interacts with human red blood cells. She also studied how stable the cadmium-glutathione complex is in red blood cells.

Her research has also explored how metal ions affect proteins like insulin. Insulin is very important for people with diabetes. She has also studied the properties of insulin and how it behaves in different conditions.
